Garuda

Garuda is a mythical bird and has a pr eminent place among Hindu Gods and in the poeple's veneration. It's said that it was Garuda to bring the Fire-Agni on the earth. He is represented as a big white-necked eagle, but in the temples his images are with a human trunk. In all Vaishnavaite temples in front of the image of Vishnu is erected a stone flag with Garuda. He is the Vishnu's vahana (vehicle), but, like a God, he has other names:
  • Amrtaharana
  • Khagesvara
  • Nagantaka = destroyer of snakes
  • Raktapaksha
  • Sarparati
  • Sitanana = white face
  • Suparna
  • Suvarnakaya
  • Vinayaka = destroyer of obstacles
  • Tarksya
  • Vihangama
